
GRAND BASSA COUNTY, LIBERIA – July 18, 2026 — A man has been arrested by the Liberia National Police after he allegedly killed his girlfriend following a dispute at her home in Oldfield Community, Grand Bassa County.
According to initial reports, the suspect, identified as Jefferson Joypleh, reportedly went to his girlfriend’s residence and demanded sex. When she allegedly refused, an argument reportedly broke out between the two.
Investigators say the suspect allegedly accused the woman of being involved in a relationship with another man. The disagreement later turned violent, resulting in the woman’s death.
During preliminary police questioning, the suspect reportedly claimed that he had taken a substance popularly known as “Brown Top” (also referred to as “Mai Sasanci”) before the incident. He further alleged that he had no intention of killing his girlfriend and made additional claims about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities have not confirmed the suspect’s statements, and investigators say they are treating them only as part of the ongoing investigation.

The Liberia National Police has confirmed that the suspect is in custody while the investigation continues to establish the full facts surrounding the case.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been transported to the Liberian Government Hospital in Buchanan, where it is being kept pending further investigation and medical examination.
Police have urged the public to allow the investigation to proceed and avoid spreading unverified information until official findings are released.
